Every year, the Colin Higgins Foundation grants three Youth Courage Awards to acknowledge young people fostering the next generation of LGBT leadership. This year, all three honorees have two things in common: they all have come out as LGBT and undocumented.

Chief Angela Zamora was only 15 years old and spoke only Spanish when she moved from Guayaquil, Ecuador to Jersey City, NJ. She says the language barrier was her biggest challenge then, but it is no longer. Last week, at 31, she was awarded with the Sailor of the Year Award by the U.S. Navy for her superb leadership and executing policy skills.
Our veterans have made tremendous personal sacrifices in order to serve our country, yet many face chronic homelessness issues. The creation of stable and permanent housing along with case management services is a crucial step in helping to address the needs of our veterans, and I am glad that this grant award will do just that.
