Three Undocumented LGBT Youth Honored at NYC Pride Weekend

Every year, the Colin Higgins Foundation grants three Youth Courage Awards to acknowledge young people fostering the next generation of LGBT leadership. This year, all three honorees have two things in common: they all have come out as LGBT and undocumented.

U.S. Navy awards Sailor of the Year

Chief Angela Zamora was only 15 years old and spoke only Spanish when she moved from Guayaquil, Ecuador to Jersey City, NJ. She says the language barrier was her biggest challenge then, but it is no longer. Last week, at 31, she was awarded with the Sailor of the Year Award by the U.S. Navy for her superb leadership and executing policy skills.

Ricky Martin was nominated yesterday for a Drama Desk Award in the category of Outstanding Actor in a Musical, for his role in the current Broadway revival of “Evita.” Martin will compete for the prestigious prize with Raúl  Esparza for “Leap of Faith.”

Armando ‘Pitbull’ Perez, winner of the BMI President’s Award, performs during the 19th Annual BMI Latin Music Awards at the Encore Las Vegas on March 30, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Our veterans have made tremendous personal sacrifices in order to serve our country, yet many face chronic homelessness issues. The creation of stable and permanent housing along with case management services is a crucial step in helping to address the needs of our veterans, and I am glad that this grant award will do just that.

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif) applauded a $72 million grant announced today by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Veterans Affairs to assist public housing agencies across the country to supply permanent housing and supportive services for homeless veterans.
