5 Latinos to Look Out for in 2012

Puerto Rican-born fashion model, Joan Smalls, walked in all of the major shows during New York Fashion Week this year and then in the Paris shows. She has now recently landed the prestigious Chanel spring campaign, which was photographed at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France. It stars Saskia de Brauw and Smalls on some uneven parallel bars.

Guatemala-born and L.A.-based, Gaby Moreno is 30, but you’d think she was born in the 1920’s the way she plays the blues. In 2010, an instrumental piece she wrote was selected for the theme of the NBC show Parks and Recreation, which earned an Emmy nomination. Besides her tunes being used for other television shows, her new album, Illustrated Songs, was listed one of “The Best Latin Music Albums of 2011” by About.com, and she will be busy touring Europe, Latin America and the U.S. in 2012. Listen to one of her latest tracks here

Jorge García, son of a Cuban-born professor and a Chilean-born doctor, is an ALMA Award-winning actor and comedian born in Nebraska. He is probably best known for his recurring role as Hurley in the hit TV series Lost. Watch out for him in the new J.J. Abrams series, Alcatraz, debuting January 2012. Will it be the next Lost?

Thomas Suarez may only be a 6th grader, but he’s already wowed adults discussing the apps he released for iOS devices at a TEDxManhattanBeach speech this year. Saying that he was inspired by his parents, friends, the people at the Apple store and Steve Jobs, the 12-year-old most recently created his own company called CarrotCorp, which sells his original apps like the popular Bustin Jieber - a game where players wallop the head of teen pop star Justin Bieber. Mayra Alvarez is making strides in our national health care as the director of public health policy in the Office of Health Reform in the Department of Health and Human Services. Today, one in three Latinos does not have health insurance, one in two does not have access to a consistent doctor, and Latinos are more likely to suffer from a serious illness like diabetes or heart disease. Alvarez is dedicated to educating more Latinos about the impact of the Affordable Care Act and what lies ahead to ensure more Latinos are covered by quality, affordable insurance.
